Beware of false advice

Updated: Jun 15, 2020

10th of Ramadhan 1441 Hijriah (3rd May 2020) (late post)

I have mentioned this in a previous post, that in life, we are blessed to meet with genuine people and not. We can benefit from both kinds of people in different ways. From the genuine ones, we learn to trust, appreciate friendship, and good council. From the latter, we learn about perseverance and being aware of people’s intentions.

People who want to take advantage of you will give advice that is not of your best interest. Rather, they will look to take advantage and try to gain benefit from whatever the situation is. But when their advice leads to things going kaput, they will shift the blame on you or other people.

This characteristic is mentioned in the Islamic tradition as one that belongs to the devil. The devil has sworn by God that he will deceive mankind and lead them to transgress from their natural predisposition. One of the ways he does it is by giving false advice (often subconsciously) that leads to one’s destruction.

He will tell people to invest their time in the wrong things; things that are based on man’s bestial nature such as lust, greed, anger, hatred, jealousy, arrogance, pride and conceit. In the end, everyone has to atone for they have done. The atonement is personal for each and every soul. A person’s sin will not be burdened on another person, and likewise, a person’s good deed will not be credited to another person.

When we comply with the devil’s advice in making a decision, and we have to atone for it, he will not be there to support us. Instead, he will shift the blame on ourselves. He will say that he did not have any power over us, and that he didn’t force us to do anything against our own will.

So whenever we are inspired or have the urge to do a bad deed, it could come from him, or the darkness of our own souls. Either way, we need to always be aware and continuously find council and advice from people who are enlightened with the truth and knowledge, so that we can nurture the angelic nature of our being.
